Red Wines from White Grapes
When I saw this year’s line-up for the Limited Editions I was quite pleased to see there was a Shiraz/Viognier blend. A few years ago at the annual Winnipeg Wine Festival at the convention centre I had the pleasure to try a Cote de Rhone from France. I thought it was fantastic, nice and fruity but also silky smooth.
The girl at the booth told me it was mostly Shiraz but that it had some Viognier included which gave it the uniqueness of its flavour.
Many French red wines (typically from the Rhone region) do include some Viognier grapes. If you’ve never tried Viognier on its own you’ll know that it’s loaded with aromatics and great fruit flavours. This intensity really helps amplify the fruit characters of a red wine when blended together.
Of course the Australians will take it one step further and really make a big fruity wine- which is the typical character of Aussie wine making.
I highly reccommend trying this year’s Limited Edition Australian Shiraz/Viognier– I know I’m looking forward to it.
Cheers,
