A Special Occasion!

May 31, 2011

I have a bottle of wine that I have been saving for a couple of years now- a Selection Estate Series Vieux Chateau Du Roi that I bottled in October of 2005.

As most know- today is an historic day for many Winnipegers with the return of the NHL.

That bottle will be empty tonight!!

Go Jets Go!

Cheers,

Bob, Manager (Wine Sense- Springfield Rd)

A Classic Wine Lovers Joke!

May 30, 2011

Here’s a classic joke that always gets a laugh:

A woman is sipping on a glass of wine, while sitting on the patio with her husband and she says, “I love you so much, I don’t know how I could ever live without you.

“Her husband asks, “Is that you, or the wine talking?”

She replies, “It’s me ………….. talking to the wine.”

Like every good joke there is some truth in it! Susan and I enjoy our wine with dinner- and I believe a good wine is a good life.

Cheers,

Jim, Manager (Wine Sense- Southdale Square)

App for Wine Lovers

May 26, 2011

I found the most amazing mobile app for wine lover’s.. it’s called ‘My Wines’. What makes it even better is that it’s a free app depending on your mobile unit… at most it will cost you only $.99!

It’s perfect as it’s basically a journal for tracking the wines you drink.

It’s very specific. It will ask you for the wine style and you simply fill in the brand and rank the wine yourself from 1 -4 stars.

There is lots of room to put in extra comments about what you have tried. It’s a handy way to keep track of the wines you like and you can easily reference when at a restaurant or when you’re picking your next wine kit!

Cheers,

Karen (Wine Sense- Brandon)

About 20 Minutes…

May 25, 2011

I had a friend text me the other day asking how long a bottle of wine lasts once you open it. I replied “about 20 minutes… then I open another one.”

When I didn’t receive a ‘smiley face’ or ‘lol’ – I realized she didn’t appreciate my sense of humour and sent her the real answer…

It’s one of those questions that has a lot of answers based on one’s personal tastes and experience. But a good guideline is 1-2 days for whites if they are kept in the fridge and 2-3 days for a red.

A lot will always depend on the age of the wine. Fruity, young wines will tend to last a little longer. Aged, more developed wines will fall apart a little more quickly.

As home winemakers we can usually push things a little longer as many of our wines are designed for younger drinking and maintain their fruit qualities a little better. We also for the most part drink many of our wines a little young which helps.

You’ll want to make sure that you re-seal your bottle as well. Your unfinished wine will oxidize very quickly if you leave the bottle open for any extended amount of time. You’ll want to at minimum push the cork back in to the bottle- better yet is to use a stopper designed for resealing open bottles.

When you’re going back to that bottle that you couldn’t finish (apparently that can happen) the best thing to do is:

Give it a look- is the colour still brite?

Give it a sniff- does it smell fresh?

Give it a taste- is there still fruit characteristics?

If your answer to all three questions is yes- then fill your glass and enjoy!

Cheers,

Craig, Wine Sense
