Two Wines that will be Ready for Christmas

October 29, 2010

BrianJamesSeason’s Greetings, well not quite yet. But it is time to check your supply of wines for the season. It’s a sad thing but the leaves have changed and it is getting cooler. Winter is on its way. Do you have your Christmas wines fermenting yet? If the answer is no, don’t put it off. Start now and be ready, or start later and scramble to get it done.

I’m sure everyone has their Chocolate Raspberry and Blackberry Ports as well as their Peach Icewines fermetning away. All three will be great to cap off Christmas dinner. But if you’r looking for something to serve with the turkey and ham, World Vineyard has two limited run wines available that will be ready in time.

WorldVineyardChilean Carmenere/Malbec that is sure to be a fine smooth wine. Carmenere is Chile’s signature grape and is becoming more and more popular with it’s easy drinkablity.

Argentine Chardonnay/Torrontes is going to be special. I’m really loking forward to this one! Torrontes is not a well known grape, but it is special to Argentina. It’s very popular and is described as:

“Enticing aromas that are strikingly similair to Viognier, with hints of peach pit, flowers, and orange citrus fruit. On the palate, it has a beautiful structure and acidity along with enticing fruit flavors that keep you coming back for another sip.”

Blended with the Chardonnay it is sure to be a guest pleaser.

Both of these wines are in short supply so stop by your favourite Wine Sense location before it’s too late.

5 Very Unique Wines

October 26, 2010

Craig1Wine Sense held our Selection Limited Edition Staff Pre-Tasting this past Sunday at The Food Studio on Roblin Blvd. It’s our chance for staff and spouses to get a sneak preview of this year’s wines. The event is of course both educational and fun (it’s a great business we’re in) and  gives us the proper insight to be able to recommend the wines that best suite your needs.

There was plenty of tasting and discussion!

If there is one word to describe this year’s Limited Edition wines it would have to be “unique”. Each of the five wines truley offer something unique for the winemaker. Let’s take a quick look at why…

-The Australilan Shiraz/Viognier is a blend of a Red grape and a White grape.

Pacifica White is a 1st time proprietory blend of Semillon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier from 4 different Pacific growing regions.

-Also known as the ‘Original Zin’, Italian Primitivo has a fascinating history and is a wonderful food wine.

-The Gruner Veltliner is one of the current ‘darling’ grapes of wine geeks and is also the first time we’ve ever offered a wine from Austria!

Portuguese Douro Tinto, another first as we have never before offered a wine from Portugal, is very rich and very special and like no other red wine you’ve had before.

This is one of the most unique line ups we’ve had in recent years and I urge you to try all five of these wines. They are limited so we may never see these styles again. For complete details and descriptions please click here.

Althought the Limited Edition wines are only available for a about a month each year- they will all be in Wine Sense’s top 10 selling wines of the year! It’s best to pre-order them.

If you would like to get a sneak preview of these 5 unique wines we still have tickets left for our Wednesday November 17th Tasting event in Winnipeg (all other nights are sold out). Talk to your Wine Sense staff for details.

A Dream Meal on a Dream Boat

October 4, 2010

BruceMy wife Corrie and I took our first cruise this summer. We cruised to Alaska on the MS Volendam. It was a 7day cruise starting from Vancouver with ports of calls to Skagway, Juneau and Ketchican. I must say that cruising is the most relaxing form of vacation I have tried.

Of all of the great experiences we had on and off the ship, this is what I remember the most:

That's my yacht in the background!

That's my yacht in the background!

The second last night of our cruise we made a reservation to eat at The Pinnacle Grill, which is the only restaurant on the ship you have to pay a surcharge to eat there. It is described as:

Beautifully appointed with Bvlgari® china, Riedel stemware and Frette® linens, the intimate Pinnacle Grill is ideal for a romantic dinner for two or a special group celebration. Creative and innovative menus, drawing from regional ingredients of the highest quality, will delight the palate and ignite the senses. Indulge in hand-selected aged Sterling Silver Beef®, fresh seafood and an extensive, world-class wine list.

It was all that was promised. My choice from the menu was a “16oz bone in ribeye steak” cooked rare, with a wonderful horseradish sauce, sides of button mushrooms, sautéed onions and whipped potatoes. The wine that was recommended for this meal was an Argentine Malbec… and it was a perfect match. Great food and great wines make the memories perfect. I can’t wait for our next “experience”. (That will be in 2012)
