What’s New!

July 27, 2012

A lot of people come into the store and say “Hi Bruce, what’s new?” Well, the answer is … a lot of things are new. We have new equipment to make your life easier, new cocktail mixes to make your summer more fun and the we have New & Improved Vintners Reserve and World Vineyard to make your wine better!

For your patio pleasure, we have the Still Spirits Cocktail Pouches. Just mix with 2 cups of white wine and top up to 1 litre with water and you can instantly enjoy your choice of Lime Margarita, Pina Colada, Strawberry Daquiri, or Seabreeze.

We have 1 litre Green Bordeaux wine bottles. Only 2 dozen needed to bottle a batch which saves time when bottling. They use a standard cork so you can use the same corks and corker you’re used to.

We have the new Bottle Bin. It is a sturdy bottle holder that holds 15 bottles with handles that makes it very easy to carry. The bins are made of recycled plastic. Great for taking wine to the lake.

And just arrived we have the 4 litre Wine Boxes. The boxes are reusable and recyclable. The bags are pre sterilized and each bag holds just over 5 bottles- a great way to save time when bottling! Great for entertaining or for taking wine to the lake.

Finally – the New and Improved Winexpert Vintners Reserve and World Vineyard wine kits. Vintners Reserve is in the new Green boxes while the World Vineyard are in the new purple boxes. How new and improved you ask? The kits have been completely deconstructed and reformulated to be the best 4 week wine kits on the market. You can expect:

-A fuller mouth feel

-Improved aromatics

-Stronger varietal character

-Improved tannin profile

-Bolder, more expressive oak

-Enhanced alcohol levels

Come on in and I’ll be happy to show you “What’s new”!

Cheers,

Bruce, Manager (Wine Sense- Pembina Hwy)

Introducing Mike and Amarone!

June 21, 2012

Hello Folks,

My name is Mike and I am the new manager at the store in Southdale Square along Fermor Ave. I love wine, beer and food so even though I do not sell food at the store I love to talk about it! Looking for food pairing options for your delicious beverage? I can most certainly help you with that! See a varietal or blend you have never heard of? I can help with that as well! Come see me for any questions you have about our wine or beer kits.

I am also an avid blogger, so check periodically for my posts about pairings, recipes, new products and just about anything else relating to food or beverages.  I have been in the wine industry for over 10 years and have a wealth of experience. My most recent bottling will be our topic today.

You may have seen a new addition in our last newsletter, Cellar Craft Sterling Amarone. I had the pleasure of making this kit for our staff. This is the first time we have a 5 week kit with grape skins included. For those of you who are not familiar with Amarone, it is an Italian style of wine. The grapes are picked and allowed to dry and shrivel, producing a wine with beautiful dried fruit characteristics. The higher concentration of sugars also brings a higher ABV(Alcohol By Volume), usually around 15%.

I decided I would treat myself to a nice dinner and picked up a rib steak on the way home, along with some veggies. The Amarone has been in the bottle for about 3 weeks now, still young for this style but I decided that my steak would be more than enough to soften the tannins. Wow, was I right! The first note was of dried cherry, with a slight hint of dried fig and the tannins were indeed grippy. There was even a hint of vanilla in the bouquet.

The first bite of steak was unbelievable and it just got better and better! A sip after each bite and I was thoroughly enjoying the pleasures of life. Some fettucini with pan fried mushrooms and zucchini rounded out the meal perfectly. I almost thought of myself in the Italian province of Verona, where Amarone originates. Alas, reality eventually brought me back to Winnipeg but what an experience.

This kit is an amazing value at $79.99 and I highly suggest you come pick one up! Then, you too can experience the pleasure that a great Amarone can bring to your day!

Cheers!

The Wine of Working Men!

June 1, 2012

My wife and I are renovating the bathroom in our 60 year old house. After having the room gutted, my plumber and I had to pull out the tub. Not a problem, right?

WRONG.

The tub was cast iron and weighed about 400 pounds. We grunted and groaned and using science and a tow rope the plumber and I finally got the beast to the alley. After that ordeal we were thirsty and exhausted…

Did we have water? No.

Did we have a beer? No.

I opened a recently bottled Selection International French Rosé. Picture it- two hard-working, big, dirty guys sitting in the back yard drinking blush wine. The French Rosé was crisp, fruity and very refreshing!

French Rosé- the wine of working men.

And it’s really good.

Cheers,

Bruce, Manager (Wine Sense- Pembina Hwy)

Twisting by the Pool!

May 18, 2012

One of my favourite summer songs is “Twisting by the Pool” by Dire Straits released in 1983. It is the type of song that no one can resist when played at a social. You just have to move!

I have the same reaction with our Twisted Mist Lime Margarita/Hard Pink Lemonade wines. As soon as a bottle is opened you have to grab a glass with ice and enjoy and yes- I do have the urge to dance!

This year’s Twisted Mist is a split kit, you get 15 bottles of Lime Margarita and 15 bottles of Hard Pink Lemonade. The best part is it takes only 28 days to make and there is no aging required.

Hard Pink Lemonade:

Don’t be fooled by the pale pink hue – this Hard Pink Lemonade packs a punch. Fresh lemons mix with notes of pink grapefruit and candied peel, and a light sweetness softens the lemon pucker making for an easy-drinking treat. Serve this cooler-style drink ice cold on a hot afternoon.

Lime Margarita:

Tart lime and tequila flavours form the base of this classic margarita. A touch of sweetness offsets the sour citrus but still leaves that zesty lime explosion. Enjoy over crushed ice.

So grab yourself a Twisted Mist kit and in 4 weeks you’ll be Twisting too!

Cheers,

Bruce, Manager (Wine Sense- Pembina Hwy)
