Remember- Limited means Limited…

February 9, 2012

We’re half way through this year’s Limited Edition Program and we’re selling out of the wines faster than any year past. If you’re lucky you may be able to find a ‘stray’ Washington Meritage or South African Sauvignon Blanc from January at one of our locations.

February’s California Petite Sirah/Zinfandel has only been in stock for 8 days and we have less than 12 kits remaining in the Wine Sense chain that have not been reserved/purchased- so if you like a ‘blockbuster’ red you’ll want to call your favourite Wine Sense location asap and ask them to hold one for you.

The good news is that there is still time to reserve March’s German Traminer Spatlese or Aprils Spanish Matador Trio Red.

The German Traminer Spatlese is a gently golden-coloured wine, unmistakable in its heady, aromatic intensity, with a pungent fragrance of lychee, tropical fruit and rose petals. Its flavours are ample, lusciously fruity and spicy. It’s great with spicy dishes, desserts or on its own. This is truly a unique wine- if you were a fan of some of the past Limited Edition styles like the Mosel Valley Gewurztraminer or Pacific Quarter you’ll love the Traminer Spatlese!

The Spanish Matador Trio Red features three grapes: Tempranillo are deep blue-black berries, high in colour and extract, with delicate aromas. Cabernet Sauvignon’s small berries yield high tannins and intense structure, while Monastrell adds grip, earthiness and ripe red fruit. The wine is lush, tannic and complex, with intense black fruit flavours of black cherry, raspberry, black currant and notes of plums and tobacco. It’s graceful with oak adding layers of vanilla, cedar and rich coffee nuances. This unique red wine pairs well with the usual foods that you would expect a red wine to pair with, as well as lighter foods and ‘tapas’ dishes like a basic white bean salad.

So call your favourite Wine Sense location and reserve your Limited Edition wine before it’s too late!

Cheers,

Craig- Wine Sense

Try Legacy Gewurztraminer

December 14, 2011

Well- after the long, hot, wonderful summer and autumn we had I finally have some white wine to drink at home again. Unfortunately I spent more time this summer enjoying the weather (and my wine) and did not keep up with production. So I just bottled the Legacy Gewurtztraminer the other day.

Legacy is a new line we carry and I’m quite impressed by it. Legacy is a value priced 16 litre wine kit (which includes labels) and is a great kit to try for those 10 litre kit makers who are thinking of making the jump to a larger format kit. Both 10 litre and 16 litre kits make the same 23 litre volume- but you’re adding only 7 litres of water to a 16 litre kit so you get a more full-bodied wine.

My Legacy Gewurztraminer finished with a light straw colour and to the nose you could sense the floral notes brought on by the elderflowers. Nice tropical fruits flavours on the finish with just a touch of sweetness to it. I recommend this wine and as luck has it , it is on sale until this Sunday, December 18th, 2011.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,

Bob, Manager (Wine Sense- Pembina Hwy)

Blackberry vs. Chocolate Raspberry

September 2, 2011

Last Saturday I assembled my neighbours, I mean focus group,  together to find out which Port is more popular- the Selection Speciale Blackberry or Selection Speciale Chocolate Raspberry. My hat goes off to my focus group as they did not jump to any conclusions… they tasted, compared, tasted again, and compared some more. They understood the vital importance of the task I had charged them with.

Like this- but in a glass!

After testing of several bottles the votes were tallied.

And the winner was….

Both!

I know it sounds like a bit of a cop-out but my tasters enjoyed both styles. Sure, some liked the Chocolate Raspberry more than the Blackberry and vice versa- but that was it. Varying degrees of enjoyment. Nobody said they didn’t enjoy either and I’m not surprised as they both won Gold Medals at the 2011 Winemaker Magazine International Amateur Wine Competition!

By the way- ALL my volunteers are excited to evaluate the Chocolate Hazelnut and Chocolate strawberry ports that I will be making this year. It will be a very busy tasting session next year with four deliscous Ports!

Cheers,

Bruce, Manager (Wine Sense- Pembina Hwy)

P.S. They Specialty Port kits start arriving the week of September 5th. Most are spoken for but you can still reserve if you’re quick. Otherwise stop by your favourite Wine Sense location and pick one up before they’re gone.
