Try Legacy Gewurztraminer

December 14, 2011

Well- after the long, hot, wonderful summer and autumn we had I finally have some white wine to drink at home again. Unfortunately I spent more time this summer enjoying the weather (and my wine) and did not keep up with production. So I just bottled the Legacy Gewurtztraminer the other day.

Legacy is a new line we carry and I’m quite impressed by it. Legacy is a value priced 16 litre wine kit (which includes labels) and is a great kit to try for those 10 litre kit makers who are thinking of making the jump to a larger format kit. Both 10 litre and 16 litre kits make the same 23 litre volume- but you’re adding only 7 litres of water to a 16 litre kit so you get a more full-bodied wine.

My Legacy Gewurztraminer finished with a light straw colour and to the nose you could sense the floral notes brought on by the elderflowers. Nice tropical fruits flavours on the finish with just a touch of sweetness to it. I recommend this wine and as luck has it , it is on sale until this Sunday, December 18th, 2011.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,

People Listen to Me!

November 18, 2011

Do people listen to me? Well, I guess they do and I am very, very happy.

What am I babbling about? Well, I’ll tell you…

Anyone who has been in my store knows that I am a huge fan of aging wines. I’m always preaching that if you think the wine tastes good now, wait until you taste it in 6 months. “Gasp, 6 months” is the common response, “it will never last that long.” I then encourage everyone to save two bottles, hide it, mis-label it, give to a friend who does not drink and lives 4 hours away. Try it when it is older and see how it improves. Then tell me what you think of the wine. Well, I have in the past few weeks had reports from “New Agers” and they’re very happy with the flavour and aromas of the aged wine. They have all noticed to quote one “ a huge improvement “ to their wines.

What they have told me:
“The wine is so smooth.”
“The wine has more fruitiness than before.”
“It seems more robust.”
“Wow!”

The most improvement in the bottles will be experience with the Selection series wine kits 15 and 16 litre Original, International, Estate, Limited Edition, and International with skins kits.

Now that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy your wine when it’s young- experiencing a wine’s evolution is part of the fun of making your own wine. Just make sure you keep a couple of bottles for that special treat!

Did you know that the cheapest wines you purchase at the wine store is at least 1 year old? Even the commercial bottlers know the value of aging. So, give aging a try. Also, do not forget to add the ¼ tsp of potassium metabisulphite and use a good quality cork like the Nomacorc.

Cheers,

Red Icewine?

September 30, 2011

I would like to tell you of a wonderful dessert wine that my wife and I enjoy. It is the Selection Speciale Cabernet Franc ice wine.

Many of you have tried the regular Selection Speciale Riesling Icewine- Sweet with unique aromatics and flavours.

Cabernet Cabernet Franc Icewine is sweet and rich, almost syrupy in texture, with rose and salmon tints, Cabernet Franc Icewine has irresistible aromas and flavours: ripe currants, notes of spice, honey, strawberry, tart rhubarb and cranberry.

So once you’ve made your current Limited Release Okanagan Peach Icewine or your speciality Ports- try a Cabernet Franc Icewine.

Cheers,

Bruce, Manager (Wine Sense- Pembina Hwy)

*Note- not all Wine Sense locations stock the Selection Speciale Cabernet Franc Icewine but they will be happy to order it for you.
