Gamay Nouveau- A Great Summer Wine?

August 19, 2011

Preamble- Gamay Nouveau (also known as Beaujolais Nouveau) is France’s traditional wine made to celebrate the year’s harvest. It is picked, fermented and ready to drink in 8 weeks. Selection International Gamay Nouveau allows you the same experience!

Last year when the Selection International Gamay Nouveau was introduced, I made the first kit we received at my store. On bottling day, my wife and I tasted the half bottle that we always have left over when bottling. It was amazing, so…. I made a second one right away.

I knew the first batch would go fast, which it did. When we bottled the second batch, my wife commented that the Gamay Nouveau would make a good summer wine. Would there be any left for summer? We looked at each other and laughed. There was no way it would last. I bought a 3rd kit and started it this past May and bottled it at the end of June- and we had 30 bottles ready for this summer and we were set!

Gamay Nouveau is a great summer wine. Served with a slight chill on a hot day, it’s amazing. Great on it’s own or with lighter summer foods it has been a crown pleaser. I will definitely be making an extra Gamay Nouveau for next summer.

Trying Gruner Veltliner

July 18, 2011

I was sitting in the yard last Saturday evening and decided to open a bottle of my  Limited Edition Austrian Gruner Veltliner. I bottled this wine recently but couldn’t wait 6 months for it to really hit its stride- so I used my Vinturi to ‘open it up’.

My impatience was rewarded! The Limited Gruner Veltliner is an amazing, light white wine with some really different notes in it- from fresh tobacco to crisp apple flavours and mild spice on the finish there is a wide variety of flavours in this wine. Gruner Veltliner pairs well with a variety of chicken and pork dishes.

The Limited Edition Gruner is pretty much gone (check with your favourite Wine Sense location to see of there are any kits available) but we now have it in the Cheeky Monkey line. Don’t let the name of it fool you- the monkey does not fool around when it comes to quality wine. So for the truly”groovy” taste of this “groovy” wine stop in and get yourself an Austrian Gruner Veltliner.

Brunello Pairs Perfectly with Pizza

July 7, 2011

Last night I picked up a couple of pizza’s for supper. I was very pleased with how good the Limited Edition Italian Brunello (2009 Limited Edition Program) went with basic pepperoni pizza. The fruit and tannins in the Brunell balanced wonderfully with the sauce and spice of the pepperoni.

Brunello is a perfect Italian food wine and will pair well with any tomato based Italian foods.

Trying Traminer-Riesling

July 7, 2011

On Saturday after work I decided to open a bottle of the Traminer-Riesling blend by Selection International. This is a nice easy to drink blend of two very tasty grapes- Gewurztraminer and Riesling. It was sweet on the front end with notes of crisp apples on the finish. Traminer-Riesling would be a nice patio wine without being as fruity or sweet as a ‘mist wine’. It’s wonderful on its own or will pair nicely with simply prepared salmon or chicken.
